Be the best ice skater you can be

Ice skating used to be an ancient way of getting across frozen lakes. Now it's a fast and fun sport! Here's how to hone your skills:

1. Don't look down

You don’t look down when you walk or run because your feet know what to do. So trust them now and look straight ahead. Looking up helps you keep your balance.

2. Don't lean backwards

Rather lean slightly forward. Leaning backwards will make your feet shoot out from underneath you.

3. Keep your knees bent

This helps your balance. If you’re still struggling a bit, open your arms wide and hold them out in front of you.

4. If you fall, make a fist

Don’t put your fingers flat on the ice – someone else could skate over them by accident with sharp metal blades. Ouch!

5. Follow the same direction as the other skaters

If you try to go against them, it will be much harder and you could crash into someone. If you can go quite fast, move to the centre of the rink so the slower people can be close to the edge to hold onto the side.
