We review: Xander

We love these awesome South African apps that help young kids with their numbers, letters, shapes and colours.

Rating: 4/5

Level: Medium

Xander has English, Xhosa and Afrikaans as well as Zulu and Swahili apps. The tasks are great for young children. Do you know what letters look like? Use your finger to draw letters, numbers or even shapes on the screen of your phone or tablet –a star, a heart, a square or a circle. As you draw, you’ll learn to recognise what numbers and letters look and sound like as well as practise getting the hang of drawing shapes and identifying colours. It’s a really fun, interactive way of learning and understanding the basics that will put kids up to seven years old in good stead for big school one day.

Best bits

We love that this app is locally made and that it comes in five languages. That means if you are English, Xhosa, Afrikaans, Zulu or Swahili speaking, you can learn in your own language or you can start learning in another African language. That’s really cool! Everything the app teaches you are things you will need when you start big school, so we think that Xander gives you a great opportunity to get ahead.

Worst bits

We haven’t found anything we don’t like about this app yet. We’ll need to play it a bit more, just to be sure…
