The Perfect Pond

Take a look at the different parts of the ecosystem in a healthy pond.

Algae

This is food for fish and for micro-organisms that fish and other animals eat.

Pond lillies

These beautiful plants can cover a whole pond. Their roots hang down to the bottom and they provide shade and protection for the micro-organisms and fish in the water.

Tadpoles

Algae is a favourite food for tadpoles. They need it so they can grow into strong little frogs.

Insects

These guys feed on the decomposing organic matter (for example, dead leaves and plants), fattening themselves up to be food for the next creature in the food chain – amphibians, fish and birds.

Dragonflies

Pretty dragonflies eat insects smaller than themselves.

Fish

They feed off mosquito larvae, or eggs, which breed on the surface of the pond, as well as algae and other insects.

Herons

These long-legged birds feed on fish, frogs, pond snails and anything else they can find with their pointy beaks.
